NAS shopping

I’ve been seriously considering an Infrant ReadyNAS device for home. It gets some great reviews, and has the ability to share space via AFP 3.1. So, I’ve been learning more about it and shopping based on price.

Infrant sells the latest, quietest NV+ model bundled with 250, 500, or 750 GB Seagate drives. They also sell a bare unit, and a lot of people seem to opt for that (but if you do, you need to check out the latest ReadyNAS Device Compatibility list). A popular place to buy the ReadyNAS line is at NewEgg—which is great, because I like NewEgg—but they doesn’t appear to carry the NV+ line yet. I’ve found them for sale on Amazon, however, with the caveat that I haven’t tracked down the empty NV+ (except for a special edition with 1 GB rather than the standard 256 MB RAM).

So far, it does look like the models bundled with drives are a better deal unless you want some middle capacity like 320 or 400 GB. Unfortunately, based on the compatibility list, it doesn’t look as if the ReadyNAS is wholly compatible with Seagate’s 320 GB SATA-II drive. That capacity would otherwise be my sweet spot, for price/capacity, at this time.
